Argentina Retirement Visa for UK Citizens: Pensionado Residence
The Argentine retirement visa is one-year renewable pensionado temporary residence, not an automatic right to settle at retirement age. A British applicant needs regular pension income of at least five times the Argentine minimum wage: about ARS 1.9 million (US$1,250) a month in September 2026.

In short
- Pensionado requires regular pension income of 5× SMVM: about ARS 1.9m or US$1,250 monthly (September 2026).
- The first pensionado permit lasts one year; renew it before expiry and seek permanent residence after three years of temporary residence.
- Temporary residence costs 100 UMSM (ARS 100,000); the first DNI costs ARS 20,000 (September 2026).
- A British tourist gets 90 days visa-free, but tourist entry is not a residence permit and does not authorise work.
- The UK State Pension is frozen while you live in Argentina, so build an income margin above the minimum.
The Argentina retirement visa for a UK citizen is pensionado (temporary residence based on pension income), not a visa granted simply because you are retired. You must document a regular pension worth at least five times the *salario mínimo, vital y móvil* (SMVM, Argentine minimum wage): about ARS 1.9 million, or US$1,250, per month in September 2026. It lasts one year, can be renewed, costs ARS 100,000 to apply for and does not permit local employment.
Who qualifies, and which income to show
Pensionado is for someone receiving a pension from abroad: a UK State Pension, an occupational or personal pension paid regularly, or an annuity. Your age alone does not qualify you. Nor does a bank balance by itself replace documented recurring income. The published test is five times SMVM, not a permanent US-dollar threshold; ARS 1.9 million and US$1,250 are September 2026 approximations using about ARS 1,545 per US dollar. Recalculate when filing and again at renewal, especially if your pension is fixed in sterling.
| Your means of support | Better route | What distinguishes it |
|---|---|---|
| DWP State Pension or regular workplace pension | Pensionado | Prove the award, current periodic amount and payments received; five times SMVM |
| UK rent, dividends or interest from your own assets, without a pension | Rentista | Same income floor; asset-derived income rather than a pension |
| Salary from an Argentine employer | Work residence | Pensionado does not authorise a local job |
| Remote earnings from foreign clients, for a limited stay | Digital nomad permit | 180 days, extendable once; no DNI and no clock towards permanent residence |
| Pension below the floor but substantial savings | Do not assume pensionado qualifies | Savings are not automatically monthly pension income; examine another residence basis |
A full new UK State Pension is £241.30 a week in 2026/27, or £1,045.63 a month averaged across 52 weeks. It can clear the September 2026 floor, but only after conversion at the rate relevant to your case and only if you actually receive the full amount. Do not treat the full-pension headline as your award: older State Pension arrangements, qualifying years, deferral and deductions change the payment. A couple should obtain evidence of each person's pension and immigration basis rather than assume one partner's income automatically satisfies two independent applications.
For a flexible SIPP (self-invested personal pension), an investment account with no regular pension withdrawals is weaker proof than a pension provider's statement confirming scheduled withdrawals backed by bank credits. If payments are irregular lump sums, document precisely what the provider calls them and choose the appropriate route before paying to translate everything. Salary from consultancy is earned income, not a pension merely because you call yourself retired.
Documents to assemble before leaving Britain
Think in two bundles: identity/background documents and evidence that the pension will keep paying. The UK equivalents are not interchangeable: an ACRO Police Certificate is for immigration, while a DBS check is for UK employment vetting. Migraciones (Argentina's national immigration office) can request additional evidence where your pension is unusual or documents do not match.
- Check your passport and names. Use a valid British passport and collect a full UK birth certificate. If the names on the passport, birth certificate and pension award differ, obtain marriage, divorce or change-of-name evidence linking them. Order certified registry copies rather than relying on photographs.
- Order an ACRO Police Certificate. Apply for the immigration certificate, not a basic DBS result; allow about ten working days for standard processing before postage, then time for legalisation. Do not order so early that the certificate is stale when you file. An Argentine criminal-record check and address evidence may be handled in the local application workflow.
- Prove your pension and its payment. Request the DWP State Pension award/payment letter, or a signed provider letter identifying you, gross and net recurring amounts, frequency and the source of the pension. Match it to recent bank statements showing credits. If the pension has not started, a forecast is not proof of income already arriving.
- Legalise the UK documents. Submit required British public documents to the FCDO Legalisation Office for an apostille (the international authentication certificate); ask the pension provider whether its letter needs prior certification to be apostillable. Budget per document and postage rather than assuming one apostille covers the entire bundle. See UK apostille steps.
- Translate for filing in Argentina. Use an Argentine *traductor público* (sworn translator) and the relevant translators' college to certify the translation; in Buenos Aires this is CTPCBA. Arrange this after the apostilles so the translator can include them. Keep originals, apostilles, translations and legible digital scans together.
Request documents while still in the UK, where obtaining a replacement from DWP, ACRO or a pension administrator is less disruptive. Give yourself several weeks for issuance, apostilles, overseas postage and translations; there is no guarantee that an appointment will fall immediately after arrival. An English letter without an apostille or a UK-only certified translation can cause a request to correct the file.
Apply from entry to first DNI
British passport holders may enter as visitors without a visa for 90 days. That gives time to file but is not permission to live indefinitely or to take an Argentine job. Migraciones can grant one 90-day tourist extension for a fee; do not rely on a day trip to Uruguay resetting your entitlement.
- Enter and settle an address. Save proof of your entry and arrange a working Argentine address for notices and DNI delivery. If renting while you organise paperwork, look at furnished flats rather than signing a long lease unseen. Check the local residence application document list for your nationality and entry history.
- Open a RaDEX file while your entry is still valid. RaDEX is Migraciones' online residence application system. Select pensionado temporary residence, upload the identity, background and pension documents, and pay the non-Mercosur fee. Your online filing must match the originals you bring to the appointment.
- Pay and attend the appointment. Temporary residence is 100 UMSM, with 1 UMSM = ARS 1,000, so ARS 100,000 in September 2026. The optional preferential appointment adds 50 UMSM (ARS 50,000). Take your passport, originals, apostilles, translations, income evidence and payment/appointment confirmation. Travel to the office on your appointment notice; a preferential slot is not an approval guarantee.
- Use your provisional certificate correctly. Migraciones issues a *residencia precaria* (provisional residence certificate) as the application proceeds, generally valid 90 days and renewable while the case remains open. Keep a copy and track its expiry; an application is not the same as a one-year permit. A planning range for decision is 3–12 months, not a promised service standard. Respond promptly if Migraciones requests a better pension letter, updated criminal-record document or correction of a name discrepancy.
- After approval, arrange your DNI. The *Documento Nacional de Identidad* (DNI, Argentine national identity card) is issued through RENAPER/the local civil registry. The first DNI costs ARS 20,000 (September 2026); allow roughly 2–6 weeks for delivery after the appointment, rather than booking a bank appointment for the next day. See DNI steps.
The base immigration and first-DNI charges together are ARS 120,000, around US$78 at ARS 1,545/US$ in September 2026; with the optional appointment the total is ARS 170,000, around US$110. These totals exclude ACRO, FCDO apostilles, sworn translations, document postage and future renewals. Cash amounts are budgeting markers, not a substitute for the payment shown in RaDEX when you submit.
Worked example: one State Pension, one smaller pension
Imagine two British partners aged 68 and 66 moving to Buenos Aires. One receives the full new State Pension of £241.30 a week, an average £1,045.63 monthly; the other receives a UK occupational pension of £850 a month. For illustration only, at an assumed US$1.25 per £1, those are about US$1,307 and US$1,063 respectively. At the September 2026 illustrative conversion of ARS 1,545 per US dollar, the first is about ARS 2.02 million and the second about ARS 1.64 million.
Against the approximate ARS 1.9 million pensionado floor, the first partner clears it by only about ARS 120,000 (6%); the second falls short by about ARS 260,000. Together they receive roughly US$2,370 monthly, but that combined household number is not proof that each independent pensionado application qualifies. They should document the larger pensioner's eligibility, identify an appropriate residence basis for the other partner and not assume that UK cohabitation automatically grants Argentine residence. If married to an Argentine citizen or parent of an Argentine child, family residence has different conditions; that guide is not a shortcut for two British spouses with no Argentine family connection.
The numbers also show why eligibility is not affordability. One person in Buenos Aires typically spends US$1,300–1,900 a month in September 2026, with a central one-bedroom around US$750 and one outside the centre around US$545. Two people share housing but pay separately for food, transport and often health cover. A *prepaga* (private health plan) is closer to Bupa than the NHS; the age-30 range of US$130–870 monthly is not a quote for a couple in their late sixties. Get age-specific written premiums and exclusions before committing.
Renewing and planning longer-term residence
Your first pensionado approval gives one year of temporary residence. Set a reminder well before the expiry date, retain each month's bank evidence and keep pension award updates. On renewal, Migraciones checks that the basis continues: a pension worth five times the then-current SMVM, not five times the amount from your first approval. A fixed sterling pension faces two moving variables, Argentine wage decisions and the GBP/ARS conversion. Arrange top-up pension evidence if you genuinely receive it; holding a lump sum in an account is not the same thing. The temporary residence renewal guide covers the filing sequence.
After three years of temporary residence, a British citizen can apply for permanent residence if the continuity and physical-presence conditions are met. Keep a calendar of entries and exits: the planning benchmark in the existing residence guidance is at least half your time in Argentina and no absence of six or more consecutive months. Do not mistake the two-year citizenship rule for a two-year permanent-residence rule: under DNU 366/2025, naturalisation applications require two years of continuous legal residence and are filed with Migraciones, not the old federal-court process. Visitor days and the transitory digital-nomad permit are not pensionado residence years.
British pension, tax and healthcare consequences
The UK State Pension paid while you live in Argentina is frozen at the rate first paid there; there is no reciprocal uprating agreement. A workplace scheme may increase under its own rules, but that does not unfreeze the State Pension. Notify the DWP International Pension Centre about your move and payment details. Ask for a current payment statement, especially before a pensionado renewal; read the UK State Pension from Argentina guide for claiming and uprating.
Tell HMRC when leaving using P85, or complete the residence pages SA109 if you file Self Assessment. UK tax residence is decided by the Statutory Residence Test, not by the Argentine DNI. Argentine tax residence and the 1996 UK–Argentina double-taxation convention can change how different pension types are taxed; a UK government-service pension is not automatically treated like a private annuity. Argentina's revenue agency is ARCA, formerly AFIP. Sort the pension's exact category and any treaty relief before assuming either country will stop withholding simply because you moved.
Residence also changes healthcare access. Under DNU 366/2025, public hospitals can charge non-residents for non-emergency treatment; emergencies remain free, while residents with a DNI retain access to free public care subject to provincial rules. Neither an NHS number nor a British State Pension pays for Argentine private treatment. Budget for cover during the filing period and compare the hospital network, waiting periods and premiums at your actual age.
Mistakes that derail pensionado applications
- Applying with a forecast instead of a payable pension. Obtain an award letter and matching bank credits before filing; otherwise establish a different residence basis for the interim.
- Using the wrong income category. UK property rent belongs in rentista, and salary belongs under a work or appropriate remote-work route. Income source matters as much as the monthly amount.
- Using the wrong UK background check. Order an ACRO Police Certificate, not a DBS certificate, and leave enough time for apostille and Argentine translation.
- Cutting the income threshold too close. Five times SMVM can rise before renewal, while the British State Pension is frozen abroad. Retain a buffer rather than making a permanent move on a 6% cushion.
- Assuming a tourist stamp, precaria and DNI are interchangeable. They are three stages with different expiry dates. Track each deadline, keep payment receipts and answer Migraciones' requests.
- Assuming residence settles tax and healthcare automatically. Notify DWP and HMRC, classify each pension under the treaty and arrange health cover for the time before approval.
If your retirement income is chiefly from investments or UK property rather than pensions, use the rentista route above. If you need local employment, pensionado is the wrong permit even if you also receive a pension. For the broader retirement budget and choosing a city, see retiring to Argentina from the UK.
Questions
- Does Argentina have a retirement visa for British citizens?
- Yes: pensionado is a renewable, one-year temporary residence category for people receiving pension income. It requires regular pension income of five times SMVM, about ARS 1.9 million or US$1,250 monthly in September 2026. Being over UK State Pension age alone is not enough.
- Is the full UK State Pension enough for Argentina's pensionado visa?
- The full new State Pension is £241.30 a week in 2026/27, averaging £1,045.63 monthly, so it can clear the September 2026 threshold depending on the exchange rate used. Compare your actual DWP award against five times the current SMVM when you apply; the margin can be narrow and the UK State Pension does not increase while you live in Argentina.
- Can I use savings or UK rental income for pensionado residence?
- A savings balance is not itself a regular pension, and rent from a UK property belongs under the rentista category rather than pensionado. Rentista uses the same five-times-SMVM income floor but asks for evidence of income from your own assets. If your only income is earned from work, look at a work or remote-work route.
- How much does an Argentine retirement residence application cost?
- Temporary residence costs 100 UMSM, or ARS 100,000 at 1 UMSM = ARS 1,000 in September 2026. A preferential appointment is an optional extra ARS 50,000, and the first DNI costs ARS 20,000. Apostilles, police documents and sworn translations are additional.
- Can a British pensionado get permanent residence or work in Argentina?
- The pensionado permit lasts one year and can be renewed; after three years of qualifying temporary residence a British citizen can seek permanent residence. It does not authorise employment in Argentina. Keep your residence continuous, track absences and show current qualifying pension income at renewal.
