Renewing Temporary Residency in Argentina as a UK Citizen
A procedural guide to Argentina’s renewal window, category evidence, legal stay under a valid precaria, and the permanent-residence route for UK nationals.

For temporary residents, the normal filing window opens 60 days before expiry. A valid residencia precaria then authorises continued stay while the application proceeds.
Argentine temporary residence can be granted for a limited period of up to three years, depending on the legal basis and the decision issued by the Dirección Nacional de Migraciones, or DNM. Renewal is called a *prórroga de residencia*. UK citizens should work from the expiry date shown in their residence record and DNI, while checking the requirements for the category they currently hold.
Most applications begin through RaDEX, DNM's online filing system. Eligibility and procedure are separate questions. RaDEX provides the filing route, but the applicant must still qualify under the relevant residence category and submit its required evidence.
The 60-day renewal window
DNM's residence guidance says a temporary-residence renewal must be requested during the 60 days before expiry. A sensible preparation date is 90 days before expiry. That gives time to review identity documents, obtain category-specific evidence and arrange apostilles and Argentine translations where required.
The late rule discussed by DNM applies specifically to temporary residence. If a temporary resident presents voluntarily within 30 days after expiry, DNM may process the renewal with a surcharge equal to 50% of the applicable fee. Once that 30-day period has passed, the right to request renewal lapses.
Departure after an overstay is a separate process. DNM describes the *habilitación de salida* as the fee-based exit authorisation required for a foreign national who has exceeded the authorised period of stay. According to the tourist and extension guidance, it is valid for ten calendar days. It does not erase the overstay or restore the lost right to renew.
Transitory residence follows a different timetable. An extension must be requested while the authorised transitory stay remains valid, normally during the ten days before expiry. DNM states that transitory residence cannot be extended once that authorised period has expired. The 30-day late-renewal period for temporary residents should therefore never be applied to a tourist or another transitory category.
Starting the application through RaDEX
The usual sequence is:
- Access RaDEX through the official Migraciones website and identify the correct renewal procedure.
- Complete the application using details that match your current identity document and residence record.
- Pay the charges generated for the procedure.
- Supply the general and category-specific documents requested.
- Monitor the email address used in the application for requests, status updates and appointment details.
- Attend in person when DNM instructs you to do so, taking original documents where required.
DNM may request additional evidence. A lawyer or *gestor* is optional for routine cases, although legal advice can be useful where residence has expired, the category no longer fits, a family link has changed or DNM has raised an admissibility issue.
The residencia precaria while a renewal is pending
Merely creating a RaDEX account or starting an unsubmitted form does not excuse a late application. Once an application has been initiated and DNM issues a *residencia precaria*, the position changes. Article 20 of the current Migration Law provides that this residence authorises its holder to remain, leave, enter, work and study during its period of validity.
Check the expiry date printed on the precaria. DNM's residence FAQ says its renewal can be requested from 15 days before expiry. Keep downloading or renewing the certificate as directed until Migraciones resolves the application. Anyone planning international travel should confirm that the precaria and passport will remain valid for the full journey and carry the current certificate.
Rentista renewals
A rentista must prove that the qualifying income continues. The current rentista renewal page sets the minimum at an amount equal to or greater than five Salarios Mínimo Vital y Móvil. DNM does not express that renewal threshold as a monthly-income test on the cited page, so applicants should reproduce the official standard precisely when assessing their evidence.
The income must arise from assets incorporated into the applicant's patrimony, such as investments, property or shareholdings. Employment earnings do not satisfy the rentista basis. Evidence should identify the asset, the applicant's ownership and the income received in a way DNM can verify.
Identity may be proved with a valid DNI or a valid passport. Applicants also need proof of address and, if aged over 16, an Argentine criminal-record certificate. DNM says that certificate is incorporated into the standard RaDEX process. For a preferential appointment, it must be obtained separately and presented at the appointment.
Foreign public documents must be apostilled or otherwise legalised as applicable. Documents outside Spanish require translation by an Argentine *traductor público*, with the relevant local formalities. Originals must be available. There is no blanket 12-month validity rule in the cited renewal checklist, so follow the requirement attached to each specific document and any direction issued in RaDEX.
Worker renewals
The worker-renewal checklist requires evidence of employment continuity or a new employment contract. In either case, the document must be signed before a *escribano público* or a DNM agent.
The filing must also include the employer's CUIT. Where the employer remains unchanged, include the employee's CUIL. Where there is a new employer, include proof that the employer is registered in RENURE. Check that names, CUIT and CUIL numbers, dates and employment terms agree across the contract and supporting records. Our CUIL and CDI guide explains the identifiers, while the DNM checklist controls the immigration filing.
Student and family renewals
Students should use the current DNM checklist for their specific course and institution. Expect to prove continuing regular enrolment and the academic evidence requested for the programme. Course changes, interrupted attendance or completion of studies can affect whether the existing category remains suitable.
For family reunification, the applicant must prove the qualifying relationship again, usually through the properly legalised birth or marriage record, and provide the document establishing the identity and status of the person who supplies the residence criterion. The family-renewal page calls that person the *dador de criterio*.
That person may be an Argentine citizen or a qualifying foreign resident. An Argentine sponsor proves identity and citizenship status. A foreign sponsor must show the valid residence on which the family application relies. The underlying family category covers specified relationships to Argentine citizens and to temporary or permanent residents. Seek case-specific advice before expiry if there has been a divorce, death, loss of the sponsor's residence or another material change.
Changing category
A move from study to local employment, or from employment to qualifying rentista income, requires evidence for the proposed new category. It should be raised within the applicable filing window. Do not select a renewal procedure simply because it resembles the old application. Confirm whether DNM expects a *prórroga*, a change of category or another residence procedure.
For an overview of available grounds, read the Argentina visa guide for UK citizens. UK-issued public documents may need an apostille and Argentine translation; the sequence is covered in Apostilling UK documents for Argentina.
Permanent residence for UK citizens
UK nationals are non-MERCOSUR nationals for Argentina's domestic residence rules. The current permanent-residence page sets a three-year temporary-residence threshold for non-MERCOSUR nationals using this route. The applicant must hold current temporary residence when applying.
The same official page requires presence in Argentina for at least 50% of the residence period granted and no absence lasting six consecutive months or more. It also requires proof of sufficient means. Three calendar years since the first approval therefore do not establish eligibility by themselves. Keep a travel record and review passport movements well before applying.
These are Argentine domestic immigration rules. They should not be confused with MERCOSUR nationality-based arrangements, which do not apply to a UK citizen solely by virtue of British nationality.
After approval
A residence renewal and a DNI update are distinct administrative steps. Once DNM approves the new residence period, follow RENAPER's process to obtain or update the temporary DNI where required. Keep copies of the resolution, current precaria, payment receipts and submitted evidence until the new DNI has been issued.
Not legal advice. Renewal eligibility, evidence and deadlines depend on the residence category and individual record. Verify the current DNM requirements and seek qualified advice where status or timing is uncertain.
Government fees change. Use the amounts generated by RaDEX and current official pages, then budget separately for apostilles, translations, record certificates and optional professional assistance. If the application is refused or DNM treats the right to renew as lapsed, obtain the written decision promptly and seek advice on any review deadline. Frequently Asked Questions
When can a UK citizen renew Argentine temporary residence?
Request the renewal during the 60 days before the current temporary residence expires. If you present voluntarily within 30 days after expiry, a 50% surcharge applies. Once that late period ends, the right to request renewal lapses.
Does a residencia precaria allow me to stay while DNM decides?
Yes. A valid residencia precaria issued for the pending application authorises stay during its stated validity and, under Article 20 of the Migration Law, also authorises exit, entry, work and study. DNM says renewal of the certificate can be requested from 15 days before it expires.
What evidence is required for a rentista renewal?
You must prove continuing qualifying income equal to or greater than five Salarios Mínimo Vital y Móvil, plus identity through a valid DNI or passport, proof of address and an Argentine criminal-record certificate if you are over 16. Foreign documents require the applicable legalisation and Spanish translation formalities.
When can a UK citizen apply for Argentine permanent residence?
For the non-MERCOSUR time-based route, the current official threshold is three years of temporary residence. You must hold current temporary residence, have been present for at least 50% of the period granted, have no absence of six consecutive months or more, and prove sufficient means.
