Retiring in Argentina from the UK: Pensions, Residence and Costs

A qualifying UK pension can support Argentine pensionado residence if recurring income reaches five times the minimum wage (ARS 1,956,000 a month in October 2026). The UK State Pension is frozen while you live there; a single person's Buenos Aires budget is around US$1,300 to US$1,900 a month before an older retiree's health premium (September 2026).

Retiring in Argentina from the UK: Pensions, Residence and Costs

In short

  • Pensionado residence requires recurring pension income of five times the Argentine minimum wage: ARS 1,956,000 a month in October 2026.
  • The full new UK State Pension is £241.30 weekly in 2026/27, but annual UK increases are frozen while you live in Argentina.
  • One-year temporary residence costs ARS 100,000 to file and can lead to permanent residence after three years of qualifying residence.
  • A single person's Buenos Aires budget is roughly US$1,300 to US$1,900 monthly before the price of health cover at retirement age is known.
  • Immigration status and the tax-residence rules of both countries run on different clocks.

A British pensioner can settle in Argentina through pensionado residence if their regular pension receipts reach five times the Argentine minimum wage: ARS 1,956,000 a month in October 2026. The full new UK State Pension is £241.30 weekly in 2026/27 and is paid in sterling, so compare your own monthly pension, at the exchange rate on the day you file, with that floor. It also stops receiving annual UK increases while you live in Argentina.

Passing the income test is the beginning of the calculation. One person in Buenos Aires might spend US$1,300 to US$1,900 monthly before an older retiree's private health premium is priced. A workplace pension or other reliable income can turn a marginal State Pension budget into a workable one.

How your pension is compared with the residence threshold

Pensionado is a one-year temporary-residence category for people receiving a pension from abroad. Its threshold is five times the salario mínimo, vital y móvil (SMVM, the statutory minimum wage), ARS 1,956,000 monthly in October 2026. Migraciones, Argentina's immigration authority, needs evidence of recurring qualifying pension payments rather than a savings balance. A documented occupational pension may help someone whose State Pension falls short.

The full weekly UK rate works out at £1,045.63 a month (£241.30 × 52 ÷ 12). At an *illustrative* £1 = US$1.30, it would produce US$1,359.32, roughly ARS 2.10 million at that September dollar rate, leaving only about ARS 200,000 (US$130) above the floor. At another illustrative rate of £1 = US$1.15, the same pension would be around US$1,202 and below the September threshold. Neither sterling example is a quoted September exchange rate, and the SMVM itself can change before an application or renewal. Migraciones determines the acceptable currency conversion and pension evidence.

Someone relying chiefly on rental or investment receipts should look at the rentista route. A British visitor's stay offers time to explore, but buying a flat or extending a visit does not create pensionado residence.

What happens to the UK State Pension abroad?

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) pays State Pension in Argentina without annual uprating. If payments have begun before departure, the weekly rate is held at the rate applicable when you leave; if you first claim there, it is held at the applicable rate when the claim starts. Moving back to live in the UK restores payment at the current UK rate. A British holiday during Argentine residence does not change the arrangement. DWP needs your actual moving date and address.

£241.30 a week is the full 2026/27 new State Pension rate, not a forecast for every individual. State Pension age, National Insurance history and contracted-out periods affect the amount. A £180 weekly award, for instance, produces £780 a month before tax. The pension is paid in arrears and is taxable, although UK tax is usually not deducted from it at source. Your personal DWP forecast gives the sounder figure for both a residence application and a rent budget.

The freeze compounds over time. If the UK full rate hypothetically rose by 3% a year for ten years while a pension in Argentina stayed at £241.30, the UK weekly rate would be about £324. The difference in that tenth year would be about £83 a week, or £4,300 over the year. Those increases and future exchange rates are hypothetical; any increases to an occupational pension follow that scheme's own rules.

Before leaving Britain, pensioners can review their qualifying-year record and the cost of filling gaps. From 6 April 2026, people abroad can no longer pay voluntary Class 2, and the announced overseas Class 3 rules require ten years of earlier UK residence or contributions. Someone approaching State Pension age can use GOV.UK's overseas claim route or contact DWP's International Pension Centre up to four months beforehand, with their National Insurance number, identity details, address and bank details. Those already drawing a pension should notify the centre of their move and payment-account choice. A UK sterling account avoids conversion on receipt, though later transfers can incur exchange costs; an Argentine account has its own incoming-payment process. DWP may send life certificates after the move and can suspend payments when a requested certificate is not returned by its deadline. The State Pension abroad guide explains claims and the freeze in detail.

How pensionado residence is filed

The Migraciones filing fee for temporary residence is 100 UMSM (immigration fee units). At ARS 1,000 per UMSM, that was ARS 100,000 in September 2026; an optional preferential appointment costs another 50 UMSM, or ARS 50,000. A first documento nacional de identidad (DNI, Argentine identity card) costs ARS 20,000. UK certificates, apostilles, translations, travel and intermediary fees sit outside the residence filing charge.

The application rests on a chain of evidence: who the applicant is, where they have lived and whether the pension actually arrives. A passport, relevant civil-status papers such as a full birth certificate or marriage certificate, and a UK criminal-record certificate, normally ACRO, cover much of the first part. Migraciones may request records for other countries of residence. UK documents needing legalisation go through the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) apostille process. For income, DWP and scheme award letters together with recent bank statements show both entitlement and regular payment; an unstarted SIPP drawdown facility is not a recurring receipt.

Foreign documents may need an Argentine traductor público (sworn translator) after apostille, with the translator's signature certified by the professional college where required. Applicants use Migraciones' residence system and attend the assigned appointment with originals, legible scans, translations, their entry record, income evidence and fee receipts. The individual file can also call for Argentine background or address evidence. Filing may bring a residencia precaria, provisional proof of residence while Migraciones decides, with an expiry date of its own. It is not yet approval of the one-year permit.

Once approved, the DNI process runs through Registro Nacional de las Personas (RENAPER, the identity registry), including delivery to the registered address. Renewals call for continuing pension evidence. After three years of qualifying temporary residence a person may become eligible for permanent residence, subject to their actual residence and immigration record. The pensionado visa guide covers category-specific documents. Naturalisation follows another timetable: DNU 366/2025 requires two years of continuous legal residence and applications go to Migraciones rather than the federal courts, although a court has declared that decree null in one case and the Supreme Court has not ruled. A DNI alone does not confer citizenship.

Which country taxes the pension?

A move does not end UK tax residence on the flight date. HMRC applies the Statutory Residence Test (SRT) by UK tax year, considering days, homes, work and ties. P85 is the departure notification where appropriate; Self Assessment filers normally use SA109 residence pages, which require paper or suitable third-party software rather than HMRC's basic online service. Departure dates, UK visits, home availability and pension statements all matter to that assessment.

Argentine tax residence follows its own rules. A foreigner generally becomes tax resident on receiving permanent residence or after 12 months on temporary permission, subject to detailed timing and absence rules. Residents are generally taxed on worldwide income, including pension money left in a British account. ARCA, formerly AFIP, administers Argentine tax. During periods when both countries regard someone as resident, the 1996 UK-Argentina double taxation convention provides residence tie-breakers and credit rules, rather than a blanket tax exemption.

The full 2026/27 new State Pension amounts to roughly £12,548 annually (£241.30 × 52), just below the £12,570 UK personal allowance if it is your only taxable UK income and you qualify for that allowance. Workplace income or rent can change the UK calculation. An Argentine credit depends on eligible UK tax actually charged, and Argentine returns use pesos rather than sterling or the UK tax-year figures.

A UK SIPP can remain in Britain, though its provider may limit services for customers abroad. Overseas transfers can incur a 25% charge where statutory exceptions do not apply, and a UK tax-free lump sum may be taxable in Argentina. Scheme rules, address changes, drawdown and withholding therefore matter before money moves. The treaty guide sets out the pension articles and relief process; someone retaining UK rental property also has UK landlord withholding and Argentine reporting to consider.

The monthly budget after the immigration test

Imagine a couple aged 67 arriving in September 2026. One receives the full new State Pension of £241.30 weekly (£1,045.63 monthly); the other receives a documented occupational pension of £750 monthly. Together that is £1,795.63 a month. Each applicant compares their own monthly pension, at the exchange rate on filing day, with five times the SMVM, and Migraciones decides how each applicant and any dependant qualifies. One combined household figure cannot be assumed to satisfy two separate pensionado applications. The occupational scheme's own rules determine any future increases.

At US$750 for a central one-bedroom flat, US$620 for food, utilities, local travel and routine extras, and US$200 for prescriptions and incidental care, the couple would spend US$1,570 before health premiums, tax, larger purchases or travel. Their illustrative US$2,334 receipts leave US$764. Health cover for two at a hypothetical US$700 would leave US$64; at US$900 it would create a US$136 monthly shortfall. These are scenario inputs, not provider quotations. The September 2026 planning range of US$130 to US$870 a month by tier describes a 30-year-old, not a couple aged 67. Age-specific quotes and chronic-condition terms change this arithmetic.

For a single pensioner, the illustrative US$1,359 full-rate monthly income is only US$59 above the US$1,300 lower end of the Buenos Aires single-person range. Health cover or a poorer conversion rate could consume the difference. Comparable general living costs in Córdoba and Mendoza can be around 20% to 30% below Buenos Aires, although a particular property, transport needs or access to a specialist can outweigh the saving.

Choosing a home around the care you need

Argentine public care works differently from the NHS. DNU 366/2025 allows public hospitals to charge non-residents for non-emergency care, while emergency treatment remains free; residents with a DNI retain access to free public care, subject to provincial administration. A prepaga is private medical membership with a paid network, closer to Bupa than UK GP registration. OSDE, Swiss Medical, Galeno and Medifé are providers to ask for age-specific quotations, including network hospitals, medicines, exclusions, waiting periods and premium increases. In Buenos Aires, Hospital Alemán on Avenida Pueyrredón in Recoleta is one location against which to measure a possible commute and a plan's actual network. The capital's SAME ambulance number is 107; police is 911 and fire is 100.

Renting during a trial stay leaves room to learn where suitable care is available. September 2026 broad one-bedroom benchmarks are about US$750 a month in central Buenos Aires and US$545 outside the centre, rather than guaranteed asking prices. Recoleta's proximity to clinics and shops can carry a premium. Since DNU 70/2023 repealed the 2020 rental law, parties negotiate lease duration, payment in pesos or dollars and adjustment frequency; expensas are building service charges on top of rent. Deposit, repairs and the adjustment formula also affect the true cost. Compare furnished rental homes for a trial stay, then compare longer-term rentals once a neighbourhood works in practice. The retirement housing guide sets out what to check in a flat and where British retirees look.

Buying later still leaves the pension income test in place and calls for funds available for medical costs, currency swings and family travel. Currency controls for individuals were lifted in April 2025, and foreign cards now receive close to the official exchange rate, though card fees, ATM charges and bank compliance can affect the pesos received. The useful comparison is the amount that arrives through a documented bank or card route. A UK home retained as a letting adds its own tax and cash-flow questions.

The decisions line up in a workable order: a personal DWP forecast and scheme terms show the income available; pension awards and apostilled documents support residence; age-specific health quotations put a price on the life that income must fund. Someone still employed in Britain has a different immigration question, covered in the work-from-Argentina guide. For a pensioner, the most informative trial stay is one that tests both the neighbourhood and the journey to care before a longer lease is signed.

Questions

Can I retire in Argentina on my UK State Pension alone?
That depends on the exchange rate on the day you file: the full new 2026/27 rate is £241.30 a week, paid in sterling, while the pensionado floor is five times the SMVM (ARS 1,956,000 a month in October 2026). Your own award decides eligibility. A single person's Buenos Aires budget and an older retiree's health premium may require more income.
Will my UK State Pension increase after I move to Argentina?
Annual UK upratings are frozen during residence in Argentina. Your weekly rate is held at the level applicable when you leave or first claim there; returning to live in the UK restores payment at the current UK rate. Other pension schemes have their own increase rules.
What is the pensionado income requirement and fee in 2026?
Recurring pension income must reach five times the Argentine minimum wage: ARS 1,956,000 a month in October 2026. Filing one-year temporary residence costs 100 UMSM, or ARS 100,000 then; an optional preferential appointment is ARS 50,000 and a first DNI is ARS 20,000.
Do I pay UK or Argentine tax on my pensions after retiring there?
UK tax residence follows HMRC's SRT, while Argentine tax residence has its own start date. Treaty rules differ for the State Pension, private or occupational pensions and government-service pensions; Argentine credit for UK tax requires eligible tax actually paid.
Can I use Argentine public healthcare as a British retiree?
Residents with a DNI retain access to free public care subject to provincial rules; emergencies remain free, while DNU 366/2025 permits charging non-residents for non-emergency care. A prepaga is optional private network cover, quoted according to your age and medical circumstances.
When can a British pensioner obtain permanent Argentine residence?
After three years of qualifying temporary residence, permanent residence may be available subject to immigration requirements and the person's actual residence record. Pensionado permission lasts one year at a time and needs renewal; buying property does not shorten that period.
