DNI in Argentina for a Foreigner: UK Citizen Guide

A British citizen can get an Argentine DNI after temporary or permanent residence is approved; you do not have to wait for permanent residence. The first card costs ARS 20,000 (about US$13, September 2026) and usually arrives at your declared Argentine address within two to six weeks of approval.

In short

  • Both temporary and permanent residents qualify for a foreign-resident DNI
  • The digital nomad permit and a 90-day visitor stay do not produce a DNI
  • The first DNI costs ARS 20,000, about US$13 at the September 2026 official rate
  • Migraciones normally starts the DNI process with the residence application
  • Normal postal delivery takes about two to six weeks after residence approval
  • A DNI proves identity but does not replace your UK passport or create residence status

A British citizen can get an Argentine DNI after temporary or permanent residence is approved; you do not have to wait for permanent residence. The first card costs ARS 20,000 (about US$13, September 2026) and is normally started through your Migraciones residence application. Allow roughly two to six weeks after approval for delivery, but keep the application receipt because failed delivery and data errors need active follow-up.

What the DNI is — and what it is not

The Documento Nacional de Identidad (DNI) is Argentina's national identity card. A foreign resident's card shows a unique DNI number, your name, nationality, date of birth, sex marker, Argentine address and an expiry date where applicable. It is the everyday ID requested by banks, mobile providers, landlords, healthcare providers and government websites.

The card does not grant residence. Migraciones (Dirección Nacional de Migraciones, the immigration authority) grants your status; RENAPER (Registro Nacional de las Personas, the identity register) produces the card that records it. If your residence expires or is cancelled, possessing the plastic card does not preserve your immigration rights.

A DNI is the standard identity document used across Argentine services, but it is not proof of British nationality. Carry your valid British passport for international travel.

Who qualifies

The old claim that only permanent residents receive a DNI is wrong. Temporary residents, including students and most workers, qualify too. Your route matters because some permissions are deliberately outside the resident system.

If you are still choosing a route, compare them in the Argentina visa guide for UK citizens. A visitor or digital nomad who needs a tax or work identifier should not try to obtain a DNI instead; use the CUIL and CDI guide.

Cost and realistic timing

These are the relevant national charges and planning figures in September 2026. The residence charge and DNI charge are separate even when you pay them during the same online process.

ItemCostSterling or dollar guideTypical timing
Temporary residenceARS 100,000about US$65Decision commonly takes several months
First foreign-resident DNIARS 20,000about US$13Usually 2–6 weeks after residence approval

Dollar conversions use the official rate of about ARS 1,545 per US dollar. Do not pay a fixer merely to obtain an ordinary first card. If you need a replacement or an urgent service, check RENAPER's live tariff before paying because those charges are different from the first-DNI fee.

Getting the DNI after residence approval

For most first-time residents, the DNI request is linked to the residence file. Do not automatically book a second appointment after approval. Check your Migraciones decision and DNI receipt first.

  1. File for residence through RaDEX. Enter the address where you can actually receive post. Pay the Migraciones fee and the separate ARS 20,000 DNI charge. Save both receipts as PDFs.
  2. Attend the Migraciones appointment. Take your original British passport and every document requested for the residence category. Staff capture your photograph, signature and fingerprints; do not bring UK passport photographs unless your appointment notice expressly asks for them.
  3. Keep the precaria. The *residencia precaria* (temporary proof that your residence application is pending) lets you prove lawful status while Migraciones decides. It is not a DNI, and its number should not be substituted for a DNI number on forms.
  4. Download the approval. Check the *disposición de radicación* (residence decision) as soon as it appears. Compare every name, date and nationality with your passport. Ask Migraciones to correct an error before RENAPER prints it onto the card.
  5. Confirm that the DNI was triggered. Your file or receipt should show the payment/request. If it does not, use RENAPER's official first-DNI service for foreigners. Take your passport, residence record and receipts; bring proof of address as backup.
  6. Track the card. Use the application number on the *constancia de trámite* (application receipt) in the official tracking service. Normal delivery is to the Argentine address declared in the application.
  7. Receive it personally. Keep the receipt and passport available for the postal handover. If delivery fails, the tracking result should identify the office holding or returning it; contact that office rather than starting and paying for a duplicate immediately.
  8. Check the card on arrival. Confirm the spelling, DNI number, address and expiry date. Then use that exact data when activating Mi Argentina or dealing with a bank. Report a production error promptly through RENAPER.

Appointment availability and delivery vary by province. A two-to-six-week delivery window is sensible planning, not a statutory promise. If tracking has not moved after that window, contact RENAPER with the receipt number and also check that Migraciones transmitted the approved record.

Worked example: temporary residence, not permanent residence

Lucy, a British postgraduate student, enters Argentina visa-free and files for temporary student residence in Buenos Aires. She pays ARS 100,000 for residence and ARS 20,000 for the first DNI: ARS 120,000, about US$78 at the September 2026 official rate. At her Migraciones appointment, the officer captures her biometrics and she receives a precaria while the application is decided.

Her temporary residence is approved four months later. She checks that the decision says “Lucy Anne Taylor”, exactly as her passport does, and that the DNI payment appears in the file. She does not book and pay for another ordinary application. The card reaches her declared address three weeks later, so her total elapsed time was nearly five months — but the DNI production itself took three weeks, not five months.

While waiting, Lucy uses her passport, precaria and provisional CUIL for university and employment administration. Once the card arrives, she uses the DNI plus CUIL to apply for a bank account. The bank still performs its own address and income checks: a DNI creates eligibility to apply, not an automatic right to credit. See the Argentine bank account procedure.

What to do when something goes wrong

The card never arrives

Track it with the receipt first. Check whether the courier attempted delivery and whether the card has gone to a RENAPER or civil-registry office. A landlord, hotel reception or former flatmate may not be able to accept it for you. Do not submit a duplicate application until RENAPER confirms what happened to the first card.

Your name or birth date is wrong

Separate a source error from a printing error. If Migraciones approved incorrect personal data, ask Migraciones to rectify the residence record. If the approved record is right but the card is wrong, raise the correction with RENAPER and show the passport, approval and application receipt. Simply ordering another copy can reproduce the same bad source data.

Your temporary residence is renewed

Read the expiry printed on the card and deal with residence renewal first. The immigration renewal and the physical-card update are connected but not interchangeable. Follow the temporary residence renewal timetable before the permit expires, then follow the instruction issued for the updated DNI.

Mistakes that cost time

  • Waiting three years for permanent residence. Temporary residents are eligible; apply through the original residence process.
  • Assuming the precaria is a DNI. It proves a pending lawful stay but does not give you a DNI card or number.
  • Paying the DNI fee twice. Check the RaDEX and Migraciones receipts before opening a separate RENAPER application.
  • Using an unstable delivery address. The normal card goes by post. Use an address where you can receive it weeks or months later.
  • Ignoring middle names. Make the official residence record match your UK passport before printing.
  • Expecting the card to guarantee a lease, loan or account. It satisfies identity requirements; providers still check CUIL/CUIT, income, address and credit history.
  • Travelling on the DNI alone. Use your British passport for travel to the UK and do not assume a foreign-resident card meets every neighbouring country's entry rules.

This page does not cover a visitor who only needs more time, a digital nomad permit holder, or a person whose residence has not yet been approved. Start with the visa guide for those cases. It also does not cover conversion from temporary to permanent status; use the permanent residence guide for that decision.

Questions

Can a foreigner get a DNI in Argentina?
Yes. A foreigner with approved temporary or permanent residence can get a DNI. A British visitor on the 90-day visa-free stay and a digital nomad permit holder do not qualify through those statuses.
Can I get an Argentine DNI with temporary residence?
Yes. You do not need to wait for permanent residence. Migraciones normally links the first DNI request to the temporary residence application, and RENAPER produces the card after approval.
How much is the first DNI for a foreign resident?
It costs ARS 20,000, about US$13 at the September 2026 official exchange rate. That is separate from the standard temporary residence fee of ARS 100,000.
How long does an Argentine DNI take after residence approval?
Plan on about two to six weeks from residence approval to normal postal delivery. Keep the constancia de trámite and use its number to track the card; if delivery fails, locate the first card before paying for a duplicate.
Do I need a separate RENAPER appointment for my first DNI?
Usually not when Migraciones collected your biometrics and DNI payment with the residence application. Check the approval and receipt first. Use RENAPER's first-DNI service only if no request was initiated or Migraciones directs you there.
Is a CUIL the same as a DNI number?
No. A DNI identifies you, while a CUIL is an 11-digit labour and social-security identifier used for payroll and many financial services. You may obtain a provisional CUIL while residence is pending, then have the record aligned with the DNI after it arrives.
