Sworn Translation in Argentina for UK Documents
For most UK documents filed with an Argentine authority, get the correct UK document apostilled first, then have the document and apostille translated into Spanish by an Argentine-registered traductor público. Confirm whether the receiving office also requires the local translators' college to certify the translator's signature; a UK-certified translation is not automatically interchangeable.

For a sworn translation in Argentina of a UK birth certificate, marriage record or police certificate, first obtain the UK document and, where required, its FCDO apostille. Which papers need which treatment?
An apostille verifies the origin of a UK public document; it does not translate it. An Argentine sworn translator signs a Spanish rendering of the text and identifies the source document. A translators' college, where required, verifies the registered translator's signature, not the truth of the underlying UK record. Start with the recipient's document list rather than paying for every paper in your suitcase.

The full birth certificate names both parents; the short version often does not supply what family residence needs. For a UK immigration police document, do not substitute a DBS check for an ACRO certificate without the receiving office accepting it. A conditional divorce order or decree nisi does not prove a divorce is final. The UK Legalisation Office cannot apostille a document issued by Argentina, Ireland or another country simply because you are British: use the issuing country's legalisation route.
Follow the document through the process
- Identify the recipient and the exact record. Tell Migraciones (Argentina's immigration directorate), your *Registro Civil* (civil registry), university or notary the issuing country, document type and purpose. Ask whether it wants an original or official copy, an apostille, a translator on its accepted register, and college certification. Outside the city, identify the college or register accepted by the receiving province. Send a clear scan of every side of the document and its attached apostille to obtain a written quote. - Approve the quotation and collect the complete set. The price normally depends on the length, legibility, specialist vocabulary, urgency and whether more than one apostille or supporting record is included. The quote should say whether college legalisation and delivery are included. Present the apostilled original or accepted official copy when the translator requires it, and check your names, dates, certificate numbers and apostille details on the draft. Ask for the signed translation in the format the filing office accepts.
- Complete certification and lodge it. If required, have the translator submit their signature for college legalisation; arrange the sequence with them rather than trying to certify the UK document at an Argentine college. A UK translator, solicitor or notary may certify a translation under UK practice. That does not put the translator on an Argentine professional roll. Order a time-sensitive police record closer to submission than an enduring birth certificate: apostilling it does not change its issue date. Avoid a rejected translation
Do not translate a birth record and leave its apostille in English when the office wants the entire foreign-language set translated. Do not detach an apostille to make scanning easier, or assume that the translator can repair a misspelt name in the original. Put supporting marriage and final divorce records in the file where they explain different surnames. Confirm whether the receiving office accepts a digital apostille before buying one: eligibility for an FCDO e-Apostille does not mean a specific Argentine desk accepts that format.
