Sworn Translation in Argentina for UK Documents

A British birth certificate may already have its FCDO apostille and still be incomplete for an Argentine residence application. The receiving office can require a Spanish translation of both the certificate and the apostille, signed by a locally registered *traductor público* (sworn translator). It may also require *legalización*, the professional translators' college's certification of that signature. The practical order is UK record, any required apostille, complete Argentine translation, then signature certification if the office asks for it.

Start with the office that will receive the papers

An apostille authenticates the origin of a UK public document. The translator renders its text into Spanish; the college, where involved, certifies the translator's registered signature rather than the underlying facts. Migraciones (Argentina's migration authority), a *Registro Civil* (civil registry), an employer, university or *escribano* (Argentine civil-law notary) may ask for different records and formats. The full UK birth certificate names both parents; a short certificate may omit information needed for family residence. A DBS check should not be substituted for an ACRO Police Certificate without the recipient's agreement. A conditional divorce order or decree nisi is not proof of a final divorce. The FCDO Legalisation Office handles eligible UK documents, not Argentine or Irish documents merely because their holder is British; those follow the issuing country's route.

Obtain and apostille the right UK record

The names and surnames on the record should be compared with the passport before paying for legalisation. Missing birth or marriage records come from a UK register office, a final divorce record from the court, and a UK Police Certificate from ACRO. The FCDO Legalisation Office accepts applications online; where an Argentine office expects a physical original, the eligible document needs the paper apostille process and return delivery. The sequence matters most for time-sensitive documents. A police record can have an Argentine issue-date limit, and an apostille does not reset the clock. A birth certificate is more enduring, although a receiving office can still demand a recently issued copy. Allow several weeks to obtain, apostille and ship UK records, especially where a court copy or overseas postage is involved.

Have the entire set translated locally

For a filing in Buenos Aires city, the Colegio de Traductores Públicos de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires maintains the register of English–Spanish *traductores públicos matriculados* (sworn translators on its professional roll). A provincial filing may use another college or accepted register. The translator can quote from clear scans of all sides of the record and its attached apostille; final filing may still require the apostilled original or accepted official copy. A physical translation and a digitally submitted translation are different deliverables, governed by what the office accepts.

Length, legibility, specialist language, urgency and the number of apostilles or supporting records affect the price. An itemised quotation can specify billable pages, college legalisation, delivery and whether the translator will handle certification. Names, dates, certificate numbers and apostille details need to match the source record on the signed version. If the receiving office requires college legalisation, the translator arranges certification of their signature and the source document, apostille, Spanish rendering and college certificate are lodged together. Complete scans are useful records, though a scan does not replace an original when the office requests one.

A translation certified by a UK translator, solicitor or notary under UK practice does not put that translator on an Argentine professional roll. The British Embassy in Buenos Aires is not an FCDO apostille counter either. People already in Argentina can order UK papers remotely and use tracked international delivery; scans can begin the quotation while originals travel. An eligible FCDO e-Apostille likewise needs the Argentine recipient's acceptance before it can replace the requested paper format.

What three family records might cost

Suppose an Argentine office asks a British parent applying with an Argentine spouse and child for a UK birth certificate, a UK marriage certificate and an ACRO Police Certificate. Each needs its own apostille, then a Spanish translation and college signature certification. At the illustrative £45 per FCDO paper apostille, the UK legalisation allowance is £135 for three, excluding certificate ordering, ACRO fees, postage and courier charges to Argentina.

For an equally illustrative local quotation, assume the three documents and apostilles take four billable pages at ARS 35,000 each, with ARS 12,000 per document for signature legalisation. Four times ARS 35,000 plus three times ARS 12,000 is ARS 176,000, about US$114 at ARS 1,545 per US$ in September 2026. These figures are an example calculation, not a published college tariff or a national flat fee. A lengthy police record, old handwritten entry or urgent job can change the quotation considerably; translation-only and translation-plus-three-certifications prices cannot be compared as if they include the same work.

Why a completed set can still be rejected

An apostille left untranslated may leave the foreign-language set incomplete for the receiving office. A detached apostille or a misspelt original cannot be fixed by the translator; supporting marriage and final divorce records can explain surnames that differ across otherwise valid documents. The apostille itself has no standard expiry date, but the underlying police or register record may be too old for a particular application.
