How to renew a UK passport from Argentina

A British passport expiring while you live in Argentina is renewed through HM Passport Office's overseas application on GOV.UK. Select Argentina as the country of application. The British Embassy in Buenos Aires does not issue routine passports, and you will usually need to send your old one to the UK before a replacement can be delivered. Allow six to ten weeks without it as a planning buffer, rather than an HMPO service promise.

That gap matters if you have flights or a Migraciones appointment requiring the physical passport. The application itself tells you what to send and where; planning the period between dispatch and delivery is the part that belongs on your calendar.

Which application fits your situation

The overseas service asks questions that distinguish an ordinary renewal from a lost-passport replacement or a first passport. It also shows the documents required for your particular case.

Start at gov.uk/overseas-passports, where the current overseas price and delivery options appear before payment. A UK-resident fee or delivery choice may not apply from Argentina. A change of name calls for legal evidence matching the application. Moving country alone does not require renewal, but expiry and the entry rules of each destination or transit country determine how soon to apply; some airlines and destinations impose stricter validity requirements than Argentina.

Before your old passport goes in the post

A passport is often needed for more than travel. Check flight plans, residence appointments and any banking identification needs against the weeks it might be away. If the Dirección Nacional de Migraciones, Argentina's immigration authority, expects the physical passport at an appointment, keeping it until after that date avoids a preventable clash. Enter the Argentine delivery address carefully, including flat, street, postcode and a phone number the carrier can reach. The application takes the details of the old passport and payment by an accepted card; save its reference and confirmation email. The checkout shows the current charge in pounds and the delivery arrangements. If your card converts the amount into pesos, its issuer sets the conversion.

Sending documents and waiting for delivery

The confirmation identifies the originals HMPO needs, including the old passport when required, and gives the destination address and reference instructions. A tracked international documents courier such as DHL or FedEx provides a waybill; ask for a quote and check that the carrier will handle passports as documents before dispatch. Keep the waybill, the covering instructions and scans of supporting evidence. An embassy address or one taken from another applicant's confirmation may send the documents to the wrong place.

Carrier delivery to the UK marks the arrival of an envelope, not HMPO's acceptance of its contents. Application updates on GOV.UK show the next stage, including any request for a better photograph or extra evidence and the route for supplying it. Once the new passport arrives at your nominated Argentine address, check the name, date of birth and validity dates. A cancelled old passport may be returned separately, according to the arrangements in your application.

What six to ten weeks means for a household

The overseas checkout supplies the authoritative passport and delivery charge in September 2026. Courier prices vary by collection city, destination, tracking and insurance, so a live quote in ARS or US$ is more useful than the historic £94.50 UK domestic renewal price. There is no verified single September 2026 courier or photo price for every Argentine address. Dispatch timing and an acceptable photograph are the parts of the wait an applicant can most directly influence.

Take a couple living in Palermo whose passports expire next June, with travel booked for late March. One has a Migraciones appointment on 8 October that requires their passport. They submit the overseas renewal on 9 October, obtain the digital photo and dispatch the old passport with tracking the following week. They leave mid-October through late December free of international travel, giving the passport time to reach the UK, be processed and return.

The other partner can renew at a different time so one adult retains a valid passport for unavoidable family logistics; a scan will not get either of them on an international flight. Their budget consists of two HMPO overseas checkout totals and two courier quotes, rather than two domestic UK fees. Earlier delivery would simply return some of that time buffer.

An Argentine DNI or residence record may still refer to the old passport. If the passport disappears or travel becomes urgent

Reporting cancels the document even if it turns up later; an airline holding a booking will also need the new passport number.
