UK Visa for Argentinians: Bringing Your Partner to Britain
An Argentine partner can visit the UK with an ETA but normally needs a family visa to move there with a British spouse or partner. For a new partner application, plan around the £29,000 sponsor income test, an English requirement and roughly £5,000 or more in visa and health-surcharge charges for one adult (September 2026 budgeting figures).

In short
- Argentine passport holders normally need an ETA to visit the UK, not a family visa for a short visit.
- A UK family visa for a partner is applied for before travelling from Argentina; a visitor usually cannot switch inside the UK.
- The standard minimum income threshold for new partner applications is £29,000 a year; savings alone generally mean £88,500.
- An overseas partner grant normally lasts 2 years 9 months; a fiancé grant lasts 6 months and does not permit work.
- Allow about 12 weeks for a standard overseas family-visa decision after biometrics, not from the date you start gathering papers.
An Argentine citizen visiting a British partner in the UK normally needs an electronic travel authorisation (ETA), not a spouse visa; an ETA permits visits of up to six months but not a move. To live together in Britain, the Argentine partner usually applies for a UK family visa as a spouse, civil partner or unmarried partner from outside the UK. New applications normally require the UK sponsor to meet a £29,000 annual income threshold, plus relationship, English and accommodation evidence (September 2026). Do not arrive as a visitor expecting to convert the visit into residence.
Choose the route before you book flights
The sponsor must normally be British or Irish, settled in the UK, or hold another qualifying status under the family-visa rules. A British passport alone does not excuse your Argentine partner from the application. If both of you live in Argentina, the British sponsor must show a credible plan to return to the UK and live together there; an Argentine address is not, by itself, disqualifying.
| Route for Argentine passport holder | Purpose and usual stay | Work in UK? | Key restriction |
|---|---|---|---|
| ETA as visitor | Visits of up to six months at a time | No UK employment | No settlement or routine switch to a partner visa from within the UK |
| Family visa: spouse, civil partner or unmarried partner | Move together; initial overseas grant normally 2 years 9 months | Yes, once visa starts | Relationship, financial, English and accommodation rules |
| Family visa: fiancé(e) or proposed civil partner | Come to marry or form a civil partnership within six months | No, until switched to partner leave | Must apply again inside the UK after ceremony, including a further fee and health surcharge |
| Marriage Visitor visa | Visit to marry, then leave; up to six months | No | Not a settlement route and cannot switch to family leave as a visitor |
Argentine nationals can normally obtain an ETA for an ordinary short visit; an ETA is tied to the passport, generally lasts two years or until that passport expires, and does not guarantee entry. Budget about £20 per application in September 2026 and use the GOV.UK ETA service rather than a reseller; use the fee displayed at checkout. If the purpose is to marry in the UK and then leave, use the Marriage Visitor route instead of assuming an ETA covers giving notice and marrying. Even a genuine visit needs evidence you will leave at the end. Repeated six-month visits are not a substitute for a residence application.
Which relationships qualify?
Marriage and a recognised civil partnership are the clearest routes, but a wedding is not compulsory. Unmarried partners normally demonstrate a relationship comparable to marriage for at least two years. The rules can accommodate couples who could not live together for work, study or cultural reasons, but they still need dated evidence of a durable relationship; two years of occasional messages is weak evidence. An Argentine marriage certificate is acceptable evidence of a marriage recognised under UK law; it is not a visa.
Include a short chronology and independently dated material: passports showing visits, travel bookings, joint leases or bills, bank statements, evidence of children, and communications during periods apart. Translate Spanish documents into English with a certified translation showing the translator's name, signature, date and contact details. Do not assume a UK family-visa application needs an Argentine apostille for every certificate: follow the UKVI translation requirement and supply an apostille only where specifically required. For residence in Argentina through your Argentine spouse, the rules are different; see family residence for a British partner in Argentina.
The financial test: income, savings and an overseas sponsor
For a new partner application the standard minimum income requirement is £29,000 gross a year (September 2026). It is a UK immigration calculation, not simply a comparison of the couple's combined take-home pay with £29,000. Dependants can affect fees and evidence even where the standard new-applicant threshold has no extra child increment. Some sponsors who first entered the partner route before 11 April 2024 have transitional financial rules; do not use the new threshold automatically for their extensions. Certain disability or carer benefits trigger an adequate-maintenance test instead of the standard threshold.
A returning British sponsor relying on employment abroad generally needs evidence of current overseas earnings and a qualifying UK job offer or contract starting within three months of return. Exact six- or twelve-month payslip evidence depends on which salaried or non-salaried income category applies. A future UK offer without proof of current earnings does not by itself meet the ordinary returning-sponsor employment route. Earnings from the Argentine applicant's job abroad are not normally counted as employment income in an overseas partner application. Other categories, including qualifying pension and rental income, have different evidence rules. If your income is close to £29,000, work through the relevant category in Appendix FM and Appendix FM-SE before resigning or moving funds.
Cash savings held for the prescribed period can fill an income shortfall. For the ordinary five-year route, the working calculation is £16,000 + 2.5 × the shortfall against £29,000. Savings alone therefore require £88,500: £16,000 + (2.5 × £29,000). With £25,000 eligible annual income, the £4,000 gap needs £26,000 qualifying savings. Funds normally need six months' evidence and must be available to the couple; proceeds of an asset owned for the qualifying period can have special evidential treatment. Do not count the market value of an unsold Buenos Aires flat as cash. A couple unable to meet this test should examine the narrow exceptions and whether a longer, human-rights-based route might apply rather than filing an underfunded standard application.
Costs and timing to budget
The Home Office changes visa fees and optional priority products. For September 2026 planning, allow £1,900–£2,300 for one overseas partner application, the range allowing for fee-schedule changes, plus £1,035 per adult per year for the immigration health surcharge (IHS). An overseas grant of two years nine months is normally charged for three years of IHS: £3,105. That puts the initial one-adult government outlay at roughly £5,005–£5,405, before English tests, certified translations, travel or any appointment extras. The exact fee shown on GOV.UK when you submit controls. For a child, a separate application and child IHS rate apply; do not use the adult total for a family.
Standard family-visa decisions made outside the UK are typically targeted at 12 weeks after biometrics; this is a service standard, not a promise. An inside-UK extension typically takes around eight weeks on the standard service. Add time to find a test slot, obtain records, book the visa application centre and receive the passport or digital-status instructions. A fiancé route entails a second, in-country application and its charges; the six-month fiancé period does not itself permit work or count as the ordinary two-year-nine-month partner grant. Priority service, if offered at booking, costs extra and cannot repair missing evidence.
Apply from Argentina: the order that avoids a wasted fee
- Decide visitor, partner or fiancé. If you will live in the UK, use the family route; if you will visit and return, use an ETA. If marrying in the UK but then leaving, check the Marriage Visitor visa. Do not buy a non-refundable relocation ticket before a family-visa decision.
- Check the sponsor and finances. Identify whether you rely on UK employment, a return-to-UK job offer plus overseas employment, pension, other permitted income, cash savings or an exemption. Gather the precise six- or twelve-month period required for your income category. Obtain the UK employer's signed letter where required.
- Gather identity and relationship proof. Argentine passport; British sponsor's passport or status proof; marriage or civil partnership certificate if relevant; evidence spanning the qualifying relationship; relevant divorce decrees for earlier marriages; and each required English translation. Explain any long separation with dates, not an unsupported narrative.
- Arrange English and health evidence. For a first partner application the applicant usually needs an approved A1 speaking-and-listening Secure English Language Test (SELT), unless a recognised degree taught in English or an exemption applies. Check the provider and test type on GOV.UK before paying; an ordinary language-school certificate is not a SELT. Argentina is not normally on the UK tuberculosis-test country list, but six months or more living in a listed country can change the position.
- Show where you will live. Supply a UK lease, ownership evidence or a host's permission and evidence that the home is not overcrowded. If you are returning from Argentina together, state the intended address and sponsor's return date; a future UK job and accommodation need to tell the same story.
- Submit the correct online family-visa form on GOV.UK, pay the visa charge and IHS, then book biometrics. The Argentine applicant attends the UK visa application centre selected in the application, usually in Buenos Aires, with their passport and appointment confirmation. Upload readable scans according to the centre's instructions. Processing starts on the biometric-appointment timeline, not when you first open the form.
- Wait for the decision before moving. Read the decision and UK digital immigration status instructions, check the validity and passport details, and travel in the permitted window. After arrival, keep address and contact details current and save proof of cohabitation for the extension.
Worked example: returning from Buenos Aires together
A British teacher and an Argentine spouse have lived in Almagro, Buenos Aires for three years. The sponsor earned £32,000 equivalent gross in Argentina over the evidence period and has a signed £31,000 UK teaching job offer starting six weeks after arrival. Both figures exceed £29,000, but the application still needs the specified payslips, bank deposits, employer evidence and genuine UK offer; exchanging ARS wages into pounds at one day's rate is not a substitute for documented earnings. The spouse supplies the Argentine marriage certificate and English translation, passport, relationship history and approved A1 test result.
For planning in September 2026 they reserve £2,100 for the overseas visa application within the £1,900–£2,300 range, £3,105 for three years of adult IHS and £300 as an illustrative test-and-translation allowance: £5,505, excluding flights and accommodation. That £300 is a household allowance, not an official tariff. If the sponsor's last job actually paid £25,000 eligible gross rather than £32,000, a £31,000 future offer alone would not close the current-income gap under the ordinary employment route; £26,000 qualifying savings might do so under the calculation above. A person in this position should establish the evidence category *before* paying UKVI.
After arrival, and common traps
A successful partner visa permits employment and access to NHS care subject to its terms and the IHS; it is not the same as an ETA and does not usually give access to public funds. Extend before the initial grant expires. Ordinarily the partner can apply for indefinite leave to remain after five continuous years on the qualifying partner route, provided the then-current relationship, English, Life in the UK and other settlement rules are met. A fiancé first needs to marry or form the civil partnership and switch to partner leave; do not count the fiancé's first six months as five-year partner-route time.
- Visitor switch: an Argentine visitor normally must leave and apply for partner entry clearance abroad. A UK wedding or shared address during a visit does not fix the wrong immigration category.
- Wrong test or weak translation: book a UKVI-approved SELT at the required level and translate the full document, including annotations; keep the original.
- Financial double counting: £25,000 earnings plus £26,000 savings is a specific qualifying combination, not permission to use inaccessible property equity or an unsupported overseas salary.
- Misreading the clock: the 12-week overseas target begins after biometrics; plan for document preparation and appointments as separate stages.
- Using Argentine rules in reverse: Argentina's residence through an Argentine spouse does not confer UK entry rights. For moves in the other direction, use Argentine visa options for British citizens.
This page does not cover an Argentine partner coming to Britain under their own work or student sponsorship, or a family whose main plan is to settle in Argentina. If you are a British-Argentine household leaving Argentina altogether, use the returning-to-UK checklist for the UK-side practical move as well as this visa procedure. If instead you are arranging both partners' paperwork before an Argentine move, use the pre-move family document checklist.
Questions
- Do Argentinians need a visa to visit a British boyfriend or girlfriend?
- For an ordinary short UK visit, an Argentine passport holder normally applies for an ETA rather than a visitor visa. An ETA permits visits of up to six months, but does not permit UK employment, residence or a routine switch to a spouse visa inside Britain. Marriage in the UK followed by departure calls for checking the Marriage Visitor route instead.
- Can my Argentine spouse get a UK visa if I live in Argentina?
- Yes, if the British sponsor meets the family-visa rules and both intend to live together in the UK. For an employment-based application, a returning sponsor generally needs evidence of qualifying overseas earnings plus a UK job offer starting within three months of return. Their Argentine spouse applies from outside the UK.
- How much savings do we need for a UK spouse visa with no income?
- Under the standard £29,000 financial threshold, cash savings alone generally need to reach £88,500: £16,000 plus 2.5 times £29,000. The money must meet the ownership, availability and evidence rules, usually including six months of records. Different financial rules can apply to some existing applicants and sponsors receiving specified benefits.
- Can an Argentine unmarried partner qualify without living together for two years?
- It can be possible if you have been in a relationship comparable to marriage for at least two years and can explain why living together was not possible, such as work or study. Provide dated, independent evidence of the relationship and of any periods apart. Merely having known one another for two years is not enough.
- Can an Argentine fiancé work in the UK before the wedding?
- No. The six-month fiancé(e) family visa does not permit work. After the wedding or civil partnership, the partner applies inside the UK to switch to partner leave and can work once that permission is granted; budget for that second application and its health surcharge.
